LOHAUS

What it was

LOHAUS is China’s first social enterprise coworking and event space. Established in June 2013, it is also one of only a handful of social enterprise coworking and event spaces in the world that devoted 100% of its profits to social impact activities. Located at Yongjia Road 50, Shanghai (French Concession / 1930s building), LOHAUS is short for Loft (or Lifestyle) of Health and Urban Sustainability.

LOHAUS is not a charity dependent on donations, nor a government-funded social welfare organization, nor is it a co-operative only for its members’ benefit. Rather it is a 100% investor-funded for-social-profit enterprise where its members have a positive impact on society through their use of the LOHAUS facilities.

Signature project

Solar Shanghai — first downtown grid-connected solar on a historic rooftop (2014). The project drew national media attention and was covered by Shanghai Daily and Shanghai STV.

Recognition

2014 Shanghai International Excellence Award; accolades from the Richard Ivey School of Business. A bilingual LOHAUS book documents the philosophy and the loft.

Partners & initiatives

Named collaborators and programs included Green Drinks China, Miss Earth China, Shanghai Forum, Inspirational Speakers Series, LED swap, aquaponics, and 3D printing events. Co-founder / partner Andrea Liu appears in media coverage of the solar launch.
